Amber, a clear polycarbonate enclosure showing the circuit board inside, product render

Nothing to hide.

Nabu Casa

Amber is the enclosure we designed for Home Assistant Yellow, Nabu Casa's open-source smart home hub and the first built specifically for Home Assistant. It runs lights, thermostats, speakers and more than a thousand other devices and services from one local system that its owner controls, with Zigbee and Thread radios built in.

The hub is made to grow with its owner: they choose their own compute module and can add an SSD, so the enclosure had to show off the hardware rather than hide it. It's injection-moulded in clear polycarbonate, keeping the board and its status lights in plain sight, and stands on brass feet. In the same open spirit, Nabu Casa publishes the enclosure files so owners can print and adapt their own.

At 124 × 124 × 35 mm, it's compact enough to sit on a shelf beside the router. Before committing to tooling, we refined the form through a series of clear resin prototypes.
